Prodigious Peregrinations

.Flag of New Jersey…..Pennsville is a township located in Salem County, New Jersey, United States. According to a recent census the township population was about 13 thousand peoople. It is named for William Penn and has a land area of about about 25 square miles. The Salem River flows along the township’s eastern and southern boundaries. Pennsville Township borders Carneys Point Township, Mannington Township, Salem, and Elsinboro Township. It sits on the banks of the Delaware River which is a little more than one mile wide at this point.

…..Pennsville is connected to the State of Delaware by the Delaware Memorial Bridge which crosses over the Delaware River. It is located at Exit 1 of the New Jersey Turnpike. Many homes in Pennsville have a spectacular view of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

At one time Pennsville was the home of a very large amusement park by the name of the Riverview Amusement Park. Large boats would carry people to the park from Philadelphia, Camden, and other towns along the Delaware River.

Pennsville is known for its excellent educational system.  Its students are famous throughout Salem County from Alloway to Norma for their many academic achievments.

…..Church Landing Road sits on the side of town closest to Deepwater and the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the main transportation route connecting New Jersey to Wilmington, Delaware. This area hosts a museum, Church Landing Farm. that is open several days per week and is available for civic and other functions. The area takes its name from fact that this was the exact spot in the 1600’s from which early Swedish and Finnish settlers would embark as they traveled on Sundays by small boat from Pennsville to New Castle, Delaware to attend the weekly Lutheran church services. In the early 1700’s the settlers constructed their own house of wordship, a church dedicated to St. George, on the New Jersey side of the Deware River. The church soon passed hands from the Swedish Lutheran congregation to an Episcopal ministry connected to the Episcopal Church of England.…..…..…………..

To the north of Pennsville are the towns of Deepwater and Penns Grove, both also located in Salem County. Penns Grove is the home of many Italian immigrants who came from the village of Valle San Giovanni in the Abruzzo Region of Italy. Pennsville is the home of the Italian Kitchen, a well known eatery famous for pizza and take out sandwiches.

….Many of the local residents of Pennsville have constructed porches, patios, and even gazebos in their yards overlooking the Delaware River. A favorite pastime of the people of Pennsville is watching the marvelous sunsets across the lovely Delaware River.

..Some prefer to focus their attention on the nearby nuclear generation facilities to the south or the city of Wilmington slightly to the northwest.…..…..…..…..…..

The nighttime view of the bridge is fantabulous.

In the early 1900s, many Italian immigrants from Valle San Giovanni and the surrounding province of Teramo came to work at the local E.I. DuPont de Nemours plant in Carneys Point. Among the first were members of the Montagnoli and Clemente families. Many settled on Harmony and Pitman Streets in nearby Penns Grove. Many people from Italy, especially the small village of Valle San Giovanni, emigrated to Penns Grove, NJ in the early 1900’s. Some of the immigrants arrived from Amatricia bring a famous pasta dish with them. In the summer months festivities included meals featuring many Italian food specialties.   One well known individual from Pennsville was actually born in Valle San Giovanni and offers authentic Italian food at the Italian Kitchen on Hook Road.
